Daniel McAlpine and The Bitter Pit

Springer has recently published an interesting new book by Douglas Parbery entitled “Daniel McAlpine and The Bitter Pit”. The book covers the life, education and career of the noted Australian Mycologist and Plant Pathologist, Daniel McAlpine. AMS members will be familiar with his name through the International Mycological Association (IMA) sponsored Daniel McAlpine medal which is awarded to an outstanding early career mycologist in the Australasian region every four years (currently held by AMS Treasurer, Sandra Abell).  The book is 52 pages and contains 39 illustrations (18 in color). FunKey: Key to Agarics

Identic and ABRS have recently published an interactive key to the genera of Australian agarics (gilled fungi). FunKey: Key to Agarics is the result of a collaboration between Tom May, Christopher Dunk and Simon Lewis (Royal

Botanic Gardens Melbourne) and Kevin Thiele (Western Australian Herbarium). FunKey: Key to Agarics is published on a USB key, and includes an interactive key (using the Lucid program) to more than 150 genera and selected species of Australian agarics, along with fact sheets on these taxa and the more than 120 macro- and microcharacters utilised by the key. FunKey: Key to Agarics also includes more than 1000 photographs and drawings, a comprehensive glossary and an extensive introduction to agaric classification and characters used in identification (with a section on microscopic techniques).
